“"You don't want kids to eat" would be a moronic response. Suggesting requirements be more restrictive without having any idea what the parameters are is also moronic. Setting up a straw man for some fictitious "liberal" to support your suggestion is even more moronic. You gave the standard right-wing response, suggesting that the problem is not that a huge percentage of children live in poverty, but that the government gives out too much. No "Liberal" wants to give out food stamps to half the children in the country, but lowering the standards will only hurt them. Why not combat the cause of their poverty instead? I don't understand how anyone would think that wasn't important.

I think you misunderstand the importance of conservation. Most of our medical drugs (the legal ones) are based on naturally-obtained secondary metabolites. We copy and imitate nature in a large part of science, it's vital we maintain biodiversity, even just for our own sakes.
