They need to be thinking shuttle-like utility, while able to deliver missions to Mars. The Ares is probably not going to provide either of those things. I think they ought to consider a new shuttle-like program to do just that. And technically, you could refuel once you were clear of the atmosphere, and use earth to sling shot to Mars.
